In South Eastern Europe, the forestry sector has significant untapped potential that could contribute to the social and economic development of a large stratum of the population. It is therefore vital to identify and tackle problems such as illegal logging that prevent the full realisation of this potential. This report presents general observations and trends in relation to forest management and illegal logging, with a view to drawing overall conclusions and suggesting recommendations for improvement. The information contained in the report is based mainly on the findings of national diagnostic audits and fact-finding studies prepared by local forestry experts.
