The Rio+20 UN Conference offered an excellent opportunity for the Government of Ukraine to express its commitment to support the establishment of a new REC office in Ukraine and to join the Charter of the REC.

As a first step, Eduart Stavytskyi, Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, signed a letter of interest regarding possible partnership with the REC. The document emphasises that the establishment of REC Ukraine could encourage public participation in the shaping and implementation of environmental policy. This could help Ukraine to become a full and responsible partner in the field of environmental protection by addressing global and regional problems, as well.

The letter signed by Minister Stavytskyi recommends launching consultations for Ukraine's REC Charter membership.
