The REC supports Principle 10 negotiations

August 8, 2017 | By Cecile Monnier

The REC is supporting the process of promoting the implementation of Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration of the UN Conference on Environment and Development on access to information, participation and justice in environmental matters in Latin America and the Caribbean countries. Further information about the Principle 10 process, and details of the REC's related projects, can be found on the Building Bridges website.

With the support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, the REC contributed to the Seventh Meeting of the Negotiating Committee of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from July 31 to August 4, 2017, by ensuring the participation of experts and representatives of the public from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regions. Despite concerns about regressive development in the ongoing Principle 10 negotiations, the event was marked by significant achievements, such as Saint Lucia becoming the ninth Caribbean country and the 24th country overall to join Principle 10. Further information can be found on the LAC P10 website.

In the framework of the meeting, the REC contributed to the organisation of the joint side event “Facilitation and Follow-up Committee of the Regional Agreement”, which took place on August 1, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina.
