The “Sustainable Use of Transboundary Water Resources and Water Security Management” (WATER SUM) project has launched a Local Water Security Action Planning (LWSAP) course in the Arabic language, made available through the project's Distance Learning Platform (DLP). The course, which made its English-language debut in April 2016, has been well received by project participants in Jordan and Tunisia. The pilot municipalities currently participating in the WATER SUM project are (from Jordan) Al-Karak, Jerash, Al-Salt and Ajloun; and (from Tunisia) Nefza, Bir Mcherga, Matmata and Sidi Ben Aoun. Funding for this WATER SUM project activity has been provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

The Arabic-language LWSAP course is available through February 28, 2017. The course is open to all interested participants from Jordan and Tunisia, as well as to the participants that did not successfully complete the assessment questions in the English version of the course.

The course contains seven units covering the following topics:

  • Water Security
  • Defining Scale and Scope
  • Setting up a Local Planning Team
  • Assessing the Current Status of Water Security
  • Analysing and Prioritising Problems
  • Designing the Action Plan
  • Monitoring and Evaluation

At the end of each unit, short assessment questions are prepared for each student. Participants who complete the course successfully are awarded with an official certificate acknowledging the achievement.

Students that completed the assessment questions from the LWSAP course in English have expressed great satisfaction and with the course content, noting that they find it a tool that can be applied usefully in their respective fields of work.

If you would like to participate in the Arabic-language LWSAP course, which is free of charge, please express your interest by writing to: wase_watersum@rec.org.
