Eleven CSOs to be awarded REC core grants through CSOnnect

October 18, 2016

Within the Environmental Civil Society Support Programme for Serbia (CSOnnect), 11 civil society organisations have been selected as beneficiaries of core grants funds. The official awarding and signature of contracts with selected organisations will be held on October 26, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at the EU Info Centre in Belgrade. By awarding these grants to civil society organisations (CSOs), the REC intends to contribute to the strengthening of the organisations’ capacities, and also to provide these organisations with an opportunity to engage in continuous work that is not strictly related to the implementation of specific projects. The awarded grants will enable the realisation of strategic and action plans and the development of internal structures, and also provide support for the work of CSOs in advocating changes in the environmental domain at national, regional and local levels.

The public call for proposals for the core grants award received 146 expressions of interest. After an initial selection process, 65 CSO consortia were invited to submit full grant applications. An evaluation committee of six independent experts further narrowed the field from 46 received applications through an interview process that resulted in 11 organisations being selected as grant beneficiaries.

The CSOnnect programme plans to use its overall fund of EUR 800,000 to provide direct financial support for organisations in the form of grants:  a total of EUR 400,000 will be awarded in each of two separate calls for proposals. The maximum individual grant amount defined by the public call for proposals has been set at EUR 45,000. Within the selection process, the committee attempted to identify CSOs with leadership capacities for advocacy, and which also have access to a quality network of local CSOs — in other words, CSOs that show clear potential for becoming credible partners for institutions in the Republic of Serbia and the EU, specifically regarding Negotiating Group 27.

In three years of involvement with the Environmental Civil Society Support Programme for Serbia, the REC has opened up a new, innovative approach that supports CSOs in the field of environment.
