It's official! Belarus signs up for MOBILITYWEEK

April 11, 2016

In 2015, the European Secretariat welcomed the participation of three cities from Belarus in MOBILITYWEEK: Minsk, Novopolotsk and Polotsk. This marked the first time in the campaign's 14-year history that any city from Belarus even registered for the event.

Several NGOs were involved in assisting or collaborating with the three cities, including: Foundation "Interakcia"; the Belarus Transport Union; the Center for Environmental Solutions; the Minsk Cycling Organisation; and the Green Network.

The European Secretariat, of which the REC is a partner, felt the need to identify a national coordinator, especially after UNDP Belarus emerged as surprise advocate last September with the following tweet: "We support European #mobility week/ #CarFreeDay! Bike & public Transport to the office today #green #Belarus".

After quickly confirming their interest in January, UNDP's resident coordinator in Belarus, Sanaka Samarasinha, added last week: "We are about to launch with the Belarusian Ministry Of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection a new project aiming at supporting sustainable transportation in the towns of Polotsk [and] Novopolotsk. We plan to use our good relations with Belarusian partners throughout the country to encourage the participation of Belarusian cities and citizens in the EMW campaign."

MOBILITYWEEK is delighted that UNDP Belarus has joined the campaign. The new coordinator is Igar Tchlouba, programme officer for Energy and Environment. National coordinators play an important role in encouraging cities' participation and in sharing information about EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. To this end, EMW 2016 will be introduced at an event hosted by the Belarus Transport Union (an association of transport experts from the state and private sectors) together with the International Road Transport Union. The event will take place on April 26 at the IBB hotel. (You can find out more information at For all those interested in supporting MOBILITYWEEK's implementation in Belarus, a follow-up meeting will be held on April 27.

With over 212 towns and cities in Belarus, we look forward to welcoming many more to MOBILITYWEEK!
