Title: Modern methods for management with the organic waste in Strumica

Description:

Objectives:

In present days Strumica is the main agricultural land for early grown vegetables in the Republic of Macedonia. Because of the enormous production, the municipal authorities are facing with a problem of illegal landfills of organic waste mainly located in the center of the city at 3 biggest market places. The main objectives of the project are:

  • Reducing of the organic waste from the 3 city green markets city park;
  • Producing and proper use of organic compost from the collected organic waste.
  • Raising the level of knowledge about ways and possibilities of composting and the preparation of compost.

Activities:

  • A public awareness campaign will be organized for selective collection of organic waste combined with workshops for organic production. The workshop will be organized together with the Public communal enterprise;
  • Supply of containers for composting and targeting of their locations;
  • Organizing collection and selection of the organic waste from the 3 city green markets and city park;
  • Composting and utilization of the organic compost from above mentioned locations;
  • Use of the organic compost for green surface in the Municipality of Strumica.

Expected outcomes:

  • Raised knowledge about ways and possibilities of composting
  • Raised knowlwdge about preparation of compost
  • Established local system for composting
  • Developed composting site on 3 bigest market places in the municipality of Strumica.

Title: Dendropark - open classroom in nature

Description:

Objectives:

  • Development and improvement of the environmental awareness and community responsibility by targeting pupils, students, local citizens, local authorities and other institutions for protection and promotion of Dendrology park located in the yard of the Forestry and Agriculture faculty in the municipality of Gazi Baba;
  • Preservation of the environment and raising the level of consciousness about preservation of natural surrounding of Municipality of Gazi Baba.

Activities of the project include:

Improvement of the Dendrology park through 2 phases:

I phase
Computer digitalization of the park, preparing and elaboration of information’s tables.

II phase
Training of the trainer’s team for educational activities relating the specific history of the park and information about the natural specific’s of the existing plants. Preparation and printing of educational material, preparation and hosting of web site, preparation of press releases for the media and local population, promotion of the Dendrology park, education and informing the local community about the Dendrology park, promotion and initiative for conservation of the Dendrology park together with the municipality of Gazi Baba.

Expected outcomes:

  • Protected and promoted Dendrology park (Dendrology - is the study of woody plants. These include trees: erect woody plants usually with one central trunk; shrubs: erect plants with numerous woody stem; and vines: woody plants that require an erect substrate;
  • Well informed and educated local population, ecological societies, media;
  • Placed 230 small tables with specific information of the plant;
  • Placed 2 big information tables at the front entrance of the park;
  • Printed and distributed 1000 educational brochures in 3 languages, Macedonian, Albanian and English language;
  • Trained 13 students for presentation of the park to the visiting students and pupils from the elementary and high schools and all interested citizens;
  • Established “classroom in the nature”
  • Implemented 3 cleaning actions of the park;
  • Created web site for the Dendrology park;
  • Created declarative support for inclusion of the Dendrology park into the Detailed Urban Plan of the Municipality of Gazi Baba.



Title: “We Are All In The Circle!” -
Establishing a model for PET selection and collection in high schools in Gostivar

Description:

Objectives:

To achieve sustainable urban environmental and economic development through practical implementation of solid waste reducing and recycling programme in 3 high schools in the municipality of Gostivar .

Specific objectives:

  • To reduce the quantity of solid waste in the municipality of Gostivar;
  • To establish a model for organized PET waste primary selection and collection in 3 high schools in Gostivar;
  • To educate and raise the environmental awareness of the citizens of Gostivar;
  • To stimulate environmentally sustainable business thinking among high school students as a precondition for environmental and economic sustainability of the society in general;
  • To stimulate the cooperation and understanding among different ethnic groups through identification of common interests which exceed the national and political ones;
  • To build a foundation for a long term cooperation between different stakeholders (the private sector, the educational sector, NGO sector and local government).

Activities:

Establishing a model for organized PET waste primary selection and collection in all high schools in Gostivar (signing a contract with a private company for PET waste collection and transport; placing special containers for PET selection in all high schools in Gostivar, defining the collection schedule); Forming multi-ethnic working groups consisted of 5 students and 1 teacher in each school (The working groups will: organize and monitor the PET selection process in their schools; monitor and coordinate the collection of the waste; be responsible for the collected waste fund; plan and run the PET selecting and collecting business in their school and wider community; prepare regular reports about project activities in their school; at the end of the school year form a new working group and train the new members).

Organizing workshops and training the members of the working groups (The workshops include: education on sustainable use of natural resources and the basic principles of Triple R; education on PET recycling process and principles; team building; creative and innovative ways to include the wider local community in the project activities and multiply the project results). Technical support for the working groups - (providing technical equipment necessary for the project, such as personal computers, printers, basic office materials).Education of all high school students for a successful implementation of the project activities (organizing a public class in each school and print and distribution of educational brochures for the students). Organizing an annual award ceremony (at the end of the project there will be an annual ceremony and the most successful school and individual will be awarded.

The Municipality of Gostivar will also give certificates of merit to the most successful school and individual for their contribution to the local community. During the ceremony each school will present their results, their own creative projects and share their experience. The new working group from each school will also be presented at the ceremony. Both national and local media will attend this event).

Expected outcomes:

  • 14.400 kg of PET waste will be collected for recycling and at least 480m3 of landfill space will be saved.
  • Providing of at least 115.200,00 MKD (about 1.900,00 EUR) for the schools.
  • Multiethnic cooperation - 15 students and 5 teachers with Macedonian and Albanian ethnic background will participate in the working groups, about 5 000 students from both nationalities will participate in the project activities.
  • Establishment of successful model for waste selection, which can than be used in other municipalities and help the implementation of the new law in general.


Title: Roof Garden

Description:

Objectives:

  • Improving of the ecological standards in a defined urban living environment.
  • Maintaining the quality of the air through decrease of pollution.
  • Regulating of the sun heat
  • Increase of the humidity in the air during the summer period in the close range of the roof garden on one multi-ethnic kinder garden in the Municipality of Chair;
  • Setting up an environment for educational purposes for children.
  • Sustainability after the implementation and the end of the project.

Activities:

Project will be realized on the roof of one kinder garden in the municipality of Chair. In the first part of the project will be realized the construction of a roof garden by taking out the existing roof construction, implementation of a new hydro isolation and finishing layer then follow the implementation of a draining system and placing humus and planting of diverse plants. At the end will be constructed security fence for protection of the children. The construction of stairs for approach to the roof garden will be external. With the project implementation is foreseen an educational campaign for the children from the kinder garden and neighboring elementary schools located on the territory of the Chair Municipality (workshops and flyers). The whole project implementation will be closely monitored.

Expected Results:

  • Improved environment in the surrounding of the roof garden located on one multi-ethnic kinder garden in the Municipality of Chair.
  • Creating an ecological space for educational purposes for the children of the kinder garden and neighbouring schools.

Title: Selection of waste – pilot project in Veles
CSO Contact: Ecological Group "Green Power" Amount: 8.787 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

Improvement of the quality of environment by establishing a model for dealing with part of the waste (plastic, paper, old clothes) and, by that, promoting contemporary urban life in Municipality of Veles;

Activities:

Supplying and installation of trash cans and containers on two micro locations in the town of Veles (First location: around 14 buildings placed from the left and the right side of the Marshal Tito Str., City court house, Central register building and Syndicate building. Second location: branch offices of: Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Cadastre and other LSG branch offices); After the installation of the trash cans will follow the selection and collection of the waste and transportation to collection stations; Together with the volunteers from the local branch office of Macedonian Red Cross will follow collection of old clothes and distribution to the people that need it, mostly among citizens living in poor Roma settlements.

Expected outcomes:

  • Reducing the quantity of paper and plastic waste and old clothes going to depo’s;
  • Reducing health hazards on the above mentioned locations;
  • Improvement of the public awareness;
  • Initiation of a resolution for selection and managing of waste in Municipality of Veles.

Title: Information, not sensation

Description:

Objectives:

Improvement of the quality of environment by establishing a model for dealing with part of the waste (plastic, paper, old clothes) and, by that, promoting contemporary urban life in Municipality of Veles;
