Approved project proposals - Bosnia and Herczegovina

Title: Establishment of “ecological islands” in urban area of Municipality Novi Grad Sarajevo
CSO Contact: Association of protection of nature, rivers, and environment «EKO-PRO» Amount: 9.500 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Establishment of green areas according to European standards
  • Increased number of green areas “ecological islands”
  • Reconstruction of nature parks and recreational zones through the establishment of «Ecological islands»
  • Support to local citizens and CSOs in their wider participation in creation of Strategic, Spatial Planning, Regulatory and Urban Plans for Municipality Novi Grad
  • Support to initiatives for solving environmental problems by concrete action (support to citizens - through lobbying)

Main activities

of the project will be: preparation and development of survey ; organization of 2 workshops in Municipality Novi Grad; establishment of “ecological islands” in two phases; organization of ecological workshops in schools; organization of round tables for local communities and implementation of public campaign (preparation and distribution of project materials: leaflets, brochures, posters).

Expected outcomes:

  • “Ecological islands” established at least on 16 locations
  • Enhanced connection and homogeneity between local citizens and decision makers (local government)
  • Improved level of access to information and public participation
  • 1000 pupils educated about needs for environmental protection
  • Improved level of responsibility of local government

Title: Campaign for improvement of communal services in Canton 10
CSO Contact: Center for Civic Cooperation Amount: 8.500 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of environmental issues among citizens and foster their participation and participation of relevant experts in the decision-making processes of the Public Utility companies;
  • To improve the quality and effectiveness of utility services as a precondition for urban sustainability in 6 municipalities in Canton 10,
  • To increase the transparency of the management of Public Utility companies in terms of procurement, spending and revenues;
  • To eliminate the illegal dump sites in 6 municipalities in Canton 10 and prevent the occurrence of new illegal dump sites.

Main activities of the project will be:

preparation, implementation and analysis of survey at the beginning of the project realization; designing, printing and distribution of posters and flyers; opening a CGS hotline to receive suggestions and complaints from the public; organize call-in radio shows for all six municipalities in Canton 10; mobilization of citizens for community clean-up projects; clean-up actions to eliminate illegal dumps in 5 local communities in each of our 6 towns; placement of boards “No waste dumps” signs at these sites and preparation, implementation and analysis of survey at the end of the project realization.

Expected outcomes:

  • Citizens more pro-active in demanding services and organizing community actions, and actively engaged in resolving environmental problems,
  • Better quality of services from Public Utility companies in Canton 10,
  • More transparent financial management of public utilities,
  • A significant reduction in the number of illegal dumps in 6 towns in Canton 10.

Title: Sustainable transport in the City of Banja Luka
CSO Contact: Center for Environment Amount: 9.000 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Reduction of the air pollution caused by gaseous emission (cars)
  • Promote the use of sustainable models of transport (cycling, walking, public transport)
  • Raising public awareness about effects caused by gaseous emission (cars)
  • Main activities of the project will be: promo actions and campaign; Analyses and researches and llobbying and civil initiatives.

Expected outcomes:

  • In scope of making long-lasting City plans of transport issues, with local authorities good communication will be made.
  • Lobbing for the better infrastructure for the cyclist and better public transport, citizens will be use sustainable modes of transport.
  • Making a new parking zones (more expensive parking place in Center)
  • Improving transport infrastructure
  • Better traffic regulation and reduction of air pollution

Title: Waste selection system in the town of Srebrenik
CSO Contact: Ecology organization "ECO - GREENS" Amount: 8.000 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Change of the existing status of waste collecting.
  • Recycling of waste to improve a better life in the community.
  • Reducing the amount of waste at wild dumps.
  • Showing citizens the usefulness of recycling and reduction of waste in the countryside and at the dumps, as well as an education about different types of waste.

Main activities of the project will be:

consideration of present status and survey the citizens; implementation of education of citizens in this area and preparing material for propaganda and radio-programs.

Expected outcomes:

  • Better way of waste collecting and treatment and better cooperation between citizens and municipal services
  • Recycling of collected waste instead of wild dumps widening.
  • 30-40% reduction of solid waste at the dumps as well (as at wild dumps in the countryside)
  • Development of companies for waste recycling and possibility of citizens to directly

Title: Local Agenda for the Northeastern Bosnia (NE BiH)
CSO Contact: EKOPOT Association for Development, Advancement and Promotion Of Ecological Agriculture, Tourism and Environment Protection Amount: 8.500 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

Joining of municipalities from the Region of NE BiH (minimum 2) to the „European campaign for sustainable cities and places“, through adoption and signing of the Aalborg Declaration, by which there would start an irretrievable developing process based on the principles of sustainability.

To promote collaboration between local administration units and the participants, the creators of the action plan LA 21 in the selected municipalities and to start the process of the Local Agenda 21 (action plan)
Main activities of the project will be: creation of educative materials; organization of the 1-a Workshop in the u F BiH; organization of the 1-b Workshop in the RS, media promotion of the project…

Expected outcomes:

  • At least 2 municipalities to sign the Aalborg Declaration.
  • Initiation of «LA 21» action plan creation process in minimum 5 units of local administration and 10 signed agreements on collaboration.
  • On the basis of acquired experiences and successfully completed transfer of knowledge from Ekopot to Suncokret within the implementation of this Project, NGO Suncokret will be qualified to independently apply project proposal on possible call for grants.

Title: Waste – decreasing & recycling for sustainability
CSO Contact: Society for protection and advancement of environment, nature and health "Ekotim" Amount: 8.000 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Promotion and raising awareness about reducing waste and possibilities of recycling,
  • Spreading pilot project for recycling in new area of city, and installation new stations for separate collections of waste.
  • Education of children in school about reducing and recycling waste and organization of competition in waste collection.
  • Organization of celebration of “Urban green days” with planting trees activities

Main activities of the project will be:

preparation of printing (promo) materials; schools campaign and competition; citizens & media campaign; identification and installation new stations for waste collection; participation in developing LEAP-s; organization of green days…

Expected outcomes:

  • Increased awareness about waste recycling and reducing,
  • New stations for separate waste collection installed,
  • New trees in urban area planted (100 seedless of trees planted), 15000 leaflets printed and distributed, 2000 brochures designed, printed, distributed, 1000 CD-s designed, distributed; 1 radio jingle prepared, broadcasted.

Title: “Say No to plastic bags”
CSO Contact: Ecological association “Kremenik“ Amount: 8.000 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Reduce using of plastic bags and replacement by textile bags,
  • Selective collecting PVC and PET packing,
  • Educate population of urban area (town of Vitez) about urban environment.
  • Raise awareness of population about waste selection & collection

Main activities of the project will be:

sewing of 3000 textile bags (with slogan “Say No to plastic bags”), make net steel containers, organization of workshops, lectures, radio-shows, preparation of jingles, education materials and promo materials…

Expected outcomes:

  • Since the main target group is women (housewives) – expected outcomes will be reduction of use of PVC bags and its replacement with textile bags.
  • 3000 textile bags, 3 net steel containers, education materials, radio jingles.

Title: Public campaign for continuation of initiative for establishment of central waste landfill with factory for recycling of communal and industrial waste in the region of south-eastern BiH
CSO Contact: CSO Mother and child - Sector for Ecology, Rudo Amount: 9.000 EUR
Description:

Objective:

To continue initiative for establishment of central waste landfill with factory for recycling of communal and industrial waste in the region of south-eastern BiH, by informing citizens and decision makers (using campaign tools)

Main activities of the project will be: creating a quality promotion-informative media presentation and broadcasting in all radio and TV stations in the region of south-eastern BiH; preparing educational-informative printed material and pamphlets- which will be distributed to the target groups and to the population in 6 municipalities; preparation, organization and realization of 6 workshops with the business sector in 6 towns; carrying out 2 workshops for the NGOs in south-east BiH; political lobbying; signing a Memorandum on collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Chamber of the Gornjo-drinska region and completing and directing all the agreements and conclusions-campaign results for regular Township Assembly procedures in all 6 municipalities.

Expected outcomes:

  • A significant contribution achieved in informing and more active participation of members of the ecological and other prominent CSOs in all towns in the region
  • Long-term monitoring provided in the households and the entire area by the educated primary target groups/representatives of CSOs and Business Associations
  • Significantly improved inter-sector collaboration and established communication and an effective long-term collaboration between the authorized sectors and the townsmen in preventing and decreasing the nitrification in the community
  • The most significant contribution to the largest project in managing the waste achieved so far in south-east BiH

Title: Support to urban sustainability of “green area” in Banja Luka
CSO Contact: Academic association ‘Eco-logic’ Amount: 8.000 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • Analysis of conditions and problems related to physical and urban sustainability of urban green areas in City of Banja Luka
  • Initiative and promotion of activities and direct expert help and support regarding knowledge improvement and awareness strengthening.
  • Supportive and direct activities for introduction of new approaches in biological, physiological and assignment protection and sustainability of urban green areas.
  • Impact on legislative bodies over nominating some direct demands, supported by signed petition of all the project participants together with other stakeholders, too.
  • Promotion of problems related to urban green areas of the City of Banja Luka

Main activities of the project will be:

seeking and selection of 5 site locations; expert inspection of selected site locations and taking the samples needed; collected data processing and creating Study by experts; preparation and production of brochures – analysis and concrete directions for managing urban green areas; educational activities for members of ecology section of grammar school in Banja Luka; local community capacities building- trainings for local community representatives, but also for local population; workshop maintenance – expert’s support to architects, urbanism planners, different contractors and other stakeholders; petition for law regulative improvement and promotional activities.

Expected outcomes:

  • Elected site locations for analysis and accomplished expert inspection of elected site locations, recorded data, samples taken.
  • Processed data, the Study created
  • Prepared and produced brochures content analysis of present situation and concrete directions for managing urban green areas
  • Educational activities carried out for members of ecological section of grammar school in Banja Luka
  • Training carried out for representatives of local community, but also for local population
  • Workshop carried out - experts support with maintaining of different useful information
  • Petition collected and proceeded to the responsible state bodies

Title: Strengthening awareness on urban environment in Brcko District
CSO Contact: Brcko Improvement Centre Amount: 8.500 EUR
Description:

Objectives:

  • To strengthen awareness of the stakeholders about urban environment problems and necessity of quality urban planning for sustainable development;
  • To promote active involvement of the civil society in decision making and dealing with environmental problems;
  • To contribute to improvement of environmental education of enterprises and local actors in regard to environmental legislation and standards.

Main activities of the project will be:

educational activities and building action plan; strengthening partnership; workshops on urban environment, and building partnership; establishing Focus group and organizing meetings (3 meetings); preparation of action plan; designing, printing and presentation of brochure with action plan (500 copies), media campaign and citizens poll…

Expected outcomes:

  • Defined action plan of priorities for urban environment of BD
  • Strengthened partnership for urban environment protection and improved participation of civil sector in processes related to urban planning
  • Improved knowledge of representatives from enterprises, authorities and civil sector on EU and BiH environmental legislation and standards;
  • Increased dissemination of information on urban environment issues.
  • Document: Action plan of priorities in the field of urban environment of Brcko District BiH, and published thematic brochure with the action plan (500 copies)
  • Media Campaign Products: TV spot (90 broadcasts), radio slogan (360 broadcasts), poster (300), leaflet (1000), poll report.
