As the demand for energy rises ever higher, the inefficiencies in
our current means of production and transmission become glaringly
apparent. Correcting inefficient systems and tapping into the limitless
natural resources at our disposal become obvious solutions to the
rising costs and pollution levels troubling societies all around our
buckling planet. In many
parts of the world, wasteful techniques result in environmental threats,
resource depletion and undue financial burdens on consumers.
The Power to Change maps out four
areas related to energy efficiency and renewable energy, including
an overview of why change is needed, a look at renewable energy
and energy efficiency technologies, a sampling of finance and policy
measures employed around the world and an introduction to the Renewable
Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP).

Cost of addiction
We
are addicted to our machines. They let us travel at great speeds,
lift enormous objects and live in comfort. But they don’t
work for free. Producing and delivering the energy they consume
comes at a cost, and the bill is higher than we think. Our current
reliance on fossil-based energy, coupled with inefficient energy
systems, results in insecure energy supplies, frustrated rural populations,
environmental harm and adverse health affects.

Shifting Gears
Many
of the problems associated with wasteful energy practices can be
alleviated by introducing renewable energy systems and improving
energy efficiency. Current systems around the world are marred by
wasteful and pollutive practices at every stage: from production,
through transmission, to use. Since energy demand continues to rise
at a pace even higher than population growth, a wise energy plan
curtails energy loss and increases supply in a way that minimises
harm to humans, respects the environment and benefits the economy.
Paving the way
Policy
makers and financiers can greatly accelerate the uptake of renewable
energy and efficiency technologies by creating market conditions
that make them commercially viable. Targets, strategies and instruments
must be tailored to local conditions, but successes have already
emerged in countries as diverse as Spain, Latvia and India.
Accelerating the Change
REEEP
- the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership seeks to
accelerate change toward more sustainable energy systems. Several
obstacles block this path, including the lack of advanced policies,
regulatory measures and financing mechanisms. REEEP sees partnership,
innovation and replication as means to breaking through these barriers.

The
UK presidency poster includes an extract of the speech of the Prime
Minister given at the European Parliament on 23 June on the front
and the credits to the people and organisations that contributed
to the development of the exhibition on the back.
