The Fifth Framework Programme (VFP) for Research and Technological Development (1999-2002) is the current RTD initiative of the EU. The Programme's budget is EUR 14.960 billion, with EUR 3.6 billion earmarked for "Information Society Technologies (IST)." Up to 17 percent of these funds are made available for the "Systems and Services for the Citizen" key action.  Environment is one of the five main sub-categories and a set of fact sheets concerning current projects is available. The IST Programme is just one of four thematic programmes launched under the Fifth Framework Programme.
