Balkan Environmental Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement Network

 

The Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention), signed in May 2003 in Kiev, entered into force on January 4, 2006. The REC has been actively involved in the process of developing this convention, which is a major tool for the protection and sustainable development of the Carpathian Mountains region.
 

Geographic scope

Carpathian countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine.

General Objectives

  • to contribute to the sustainable development of the Carpathian Mountains region;
  • to support the streamlining of efforts to implement the Carpathian Convention; and
  • to facilitate implementation of the Convention at the local level, through increased awareness and ownership by the local authorities

Since 2004, the REC, in partnership with EURAC, has been implementing the first phase of a project aimed at supporting the implementation of the Carpathian Convention.

The project is designed in two different phases.
