Major Achievements:
The Country Office engages local Estonian communities by offering services and expertise on environmental education, education for sustainable development and public participation. REC Estonia is participating in strategic planning and consultancy on non-formal adult education in Estonia and in Baltic Sea Region. Cooperative projects with Ukraine started in 2007.


Services

Information Services
REC Estonia provides information upon request through its Internet homepage, local language bulletins and library. The information service takes on a regional aspect, as REC Estonia has the capacity to provide environmental information and contacts for Central and Eastern Europe countries through the network of REC country offices. Besides regional information, REC Estonia facilitates contacts for finding cooperation partners.

Internet homepage
The Internet homepage at http://www.recestonia.ee provides information about the mission and activities of REC Estonia, information and materials from the country office projects and activities, as well as an electronic version of the REC Estonia Bulletin.

Local-language newsletter
REC Estonia issues a local Bulletin in the Estonian language. The aim of the publication is to introduce region-wide environmental topics and provide a forum for local organisations to introduce themselves. The Bulletin is sent free of charge to environmental NGOs, municipalities, Ministry of Environment, environmental businesses and libraries.

Library service
The library of REC Estonia consists roughly 2,000 environmental publications. The library is accessible to all visitors free of charge.

Capacity building for environmental NGOs
REC Estonia has organised training for environmental NGOs on different topics, such as:

  • NGO management;
  • public participation in environmental decision making;
  • implementation of the Water Framework Directive;
  • urban transport;
  • project development and implementation;
  • volunteer work;
  • different environmental issues.

Besides organising training for developing project application skills, REC Estonia consults NGOs on project development and assists in finding partners.

Major Projects:

Assistance to the Environmental Management in the Estonian NGOs
through Training and Interactive Web Site
In order to assist the environmental management of the Estonian NGOs the project team will provide to the NGO leaders training program and interactive Internet based tools.

Providing assistance to the development of sustainable entrepreneurship in Ukraine
The project idea is to introduce to the officials and businessmen of Kozelec the Estonian experience on sustainable entrepreneurship, focusing specially on tourism.

Supporting Environmental Studies for young Estonian Scientists in German Universities
REC Estonia mediates grants from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) for Estonian young scientists for internship and practical research in German universities or enterprises. The promotional activities concentrate on environmental technology and research, nature conservation, environmental communication and cultural assets.

ChangeLAB - Changing Lifestyles, Attitudes and Behavior
ChangeLAB was a project about changing lifestyles, attitudes and behavior. The aim of the project was to disseminate its findings to policymakers and practitioners and provide a practical toolkit, with an interactive decision-making tool, linked to a database of relevant practice examples and analysis.

Technical Assistance for the Pilot Harju Sub-River Basin District Water Management Plan
The project “Technical Assistance for the Pilot Harju Sub-River Basin District Water Management Plans” aimed to assist the Estonian Government in implementation of the Water Framework Directive. REC Estonia was responsible for public participation and capacity building activities.
