The local water security action plan (LWSAP) for Greater Karak Municipality, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, was developed through a participatory planning process in the first half of 2016. The baseline for the development of the LWSAP was the municipality's participation in the regional project “Sustainable Use of Transboundary Water Resources and Water Security Management” (WATER SUM), Component II, Water and Security (WaSe). The aim of the WaSe component is to promote a comprehensive and integrated approach to water security and ecosystem services and to contribute to the sustainable development of eight local communities in the MENA region as part of efforts to combat water scarcity, reduce the threat of conflict, halt the downward spiral of poverty, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, and increase human well-being within the wider context of regional peace and stability.
The LWSAP for Greater Karak Municipality was drafted using the methodology developed in the framework of the WATER SUM project and described in the Local Water Security Action Planning Manual.
The WATER SUM project is implemented by the REC with funding from the Government of Sweden.
