The third issue of What’s Shaking puts a spotlight on the SEiSMiC National Network in Great Britain, a European leader in the field of devolved governance and social innovation. In the UK, the Conservative Party Government of David Cameron has championed the notion of a “Big Society”, where socially innovative community groups take over burdens once carried by the welfare state. In the Big Society, being a UK national is no longer a simple matter of paying taxes and casting an occasional vote. Britons should get involved in “active citizenship” by contributing their time and talents for the betterment of their local communities.

The SEiSMiC project supports and adds a social dimension to JPI Urban Europe. It is funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration, and is implemented with the participation of the REC's Smart Cities and Mobility Topic Area.
