Newsletter of the Environmental Protection of International River Basins project
The Environmental Protection of International River Basins (EPIRB) project targets the improvement of water quality in transboundary river basins in the wider Black Sea region and Belarus. Issue 5 of In the Flow features an interview with Nataliia Pyshna, chief of the Groundwater Resources Assessment Department within the State Service for Geology and Mineral Resources of Ukraine. She describes how Ukraine is currently aligning its legislation with the EU Water Framework Directive, and how the project is helping to improve groundwater quality. A detailed article then explores how the project is focusing on harmonising water legislation with EU directives in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine. The newsletter also introduces a guidance document published in the context of the EPIRB project to provide support to experts in analysing pressures and impacts in the project’s pilot river basins. The issue closes with summaries of a training on hydromorphological quality assessment held in Georgia, and of consultations held in the six pilot river basins.
The EU-funded EPIRB project is implemented with the assistance of the REC’s Water Management Topic Area, as part of a consortium led by Hulla and Co. Human Dynamics KG.
