The growing problems related to climate change were on full display in 2005, as was the rising call for greater emphasis on sustainable development. The need for cooperation, partnership and the sharing of lessons learned became ever clearer. The REC is proud that its tools and solutions for sustainability and environmental protection were put to effective use in this context. The past year was also marked by increased attention to energy issues. Where the growing alarm over global warming was not enough to grab the region’s attention, market forces brought home the point that society must put greater stock in the research and uptake of renewable energy and energy efficiency. We highlight renewable technologies at our disposal and pay tribute to some classic models of efficiency that demand no energy but our own.
