During the six years in which the REC has been active in the region, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have come a long way in the transition process. Some of the most difficult obstacles to developing market economies and democratic governance still loom large and the legacy of environmental degradation remains to be overcome. These nations are now preparing to address the challenge of accession to the European Union and to the more long-term effort to implement sustainable development. All of these challenges require cooperation between the countries within and outside the region, as well as between governments, local communities, NGOs, businesses and other stakeholders on local, national and international levels.
