The European Mobility Week campaign takes place in towns and cities between September 16 and 22 each year, traditionally ending with Car-Free Day, or an "In Town Without My Car" event, on September 22.
The European Commission initiative aims to encourage a modal shift from individual car use to more sustainable modes of transport such as cycling, walking or public transport. The campaign represents an opportunity for participating towns and cities to demonstrate the importance of sustainable urban mobility and for local authorities to test their transport policies and present them to citizens.
As part of the secretariat for European Mobility Week, the REC leads on the liaison and (re)engagement of national coordinators, who work towards greater city involvement in the annual campaign. The REC is one of the European coordinators, along with Eurocities; ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability; and the European Commission.
The REC's activities mainly involve strengthening bilateral relations and making visits to support national coordinators, who are typically representatives of national ministries and agencies.
