The mission of REC Latvia is to contribute to environmental protection by carrying out environmental policy research and drafting policy recommendations for national and local-level administrations; promoting the exchange of information between state institutions, local governments, entrepreneurs, NGOs, the media and civil society; and enhancing environmental awareness through seminars, trainings and other activities.
REC Latvia operates an environmental library and provides assistance to students on environmental management programmes in their research efforts. For six years REC Latvia has chaired the Latvian Environmental NGOs and Professional Associations Forum.
REC Latvia offers expertise in environmental policy research and policy advice; environmental communication and education; climate policy; nature resources management, with particular emphasis on river basin and integrated coastal zone management; local environmental planning; and capacity building in various environmental fields.
The country office has practical experience working with neighbouring EU countries, with Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, and in South Eastern Europe with Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Kosovo (as defined under UNSCR 1244).
Recent donors include the European Economic Area (EEA) financial instrument for the environmental sector funded by Norway, Lichtenstein and Iceland; the Ministry of Environment of Latvia; the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund; and the Soros Foundation - Latvia.
REC Latvia implements its activities in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and its institutions (including environmental inspectorates and the nature protection agency).
It also cooperates closely with academia (the University of Latvia and the Institute of Physical Energy), with major NGOs and professional associations (including the Latvian Waste Management Association, the NGO Green Liberty and the Latvian Environmental Protection Club).
