UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment Assembled in Turkey

At the third meeting of the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment REC Turkey Director Rifat Ünal SAYMAN emphasized the importance of preparation and implementation of local climate change action plans for municipalities in combating climate change. During the meeting, he was also selected as a member of the Advisory Board of the UCLG-MEWA Commission on Environment.

Third Meeting of the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment has been hosted by the Municipality of Selçuklu in Konya, Turkey on 7-8th of August with the aim of discussing the issues on the policies on fighting against climate change, process of the preparation of action plan, water and wastewater management strategies in the cities, and resilient cities on climate change. Approximately 300 experts mainly from Turkey, Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine and beyond have participated to the meeting. UCLG-MEWA Co-President Mohamed Saadieh, Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay and UCLG-MEWA General Secretary Mehmet Duman made opening speeches.

REC Turkey Director Rifat Ünal SAYMAN participated to the first panel -Policies on Fighting against and Adapting to Climate Change: Action Plan Preparation Processes- as a speaker. Sayman underlined the importance of the municipalities in general and metropolitan municipalities specifically in combating climate change. Sayman emphasized that there are 30 metropolitan municipalities in Turkey sheltering 77% of the total population of the country. However, only four of these municipalities have local climate change action plans (LCCAP). According to Sayman, preparation of LCCAP should be priority for UCLG-MEWA countries. The moderator of the panel was Osman Şenaydın (Union of Municipalities of Turkey) and other panelists were; Ömer Öztürk (Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of Turkish Republic), Shirin Reuvers (Carbon Disclosure Project), Dr. Seda Özdemir (İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality) and Gökhan Yaman (Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality) who discussed the role of local governments about climate change and shared their experiences.

On the second day, the Administrative Session of UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment has been held. An Advisory Board has been generated for UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment. REC Turkey Director Rifat Ünal SAYMAN has been selected as member of the Advisory Board.
