REC facilitates coordination with Tunisian institutions on flood measures

January 31, 2018

On January 23, 2018, following a series of meetings and consultations, an agreement of cooperation between the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture and the country’s National Institute of Meteorology (INM) was formalised with the signing of a Convention on Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System.

Signing the agreement was H.E Abdallah Rebhi, Secretary of State in Charge of Hydraulic Resources, in the presence of: Mr. Lotfi Frigui, General Director of the Directorate of Water Resources; Mr. Hedi Agrebi Jaoudi, General Director of the National Institute of Meteorology, as well as several general directors and technicians from the involved institutions.

H.E Abdallah Rebhi acknowledged his appreciation for the initiative and the wide-ranging interest that it will bring to all relevant institutions. He also expressed his gratitude to the REC-coordinated WATERSUM project for providing a platform for creating this opportunity.

The agreement identifies ways of cooperation between the General Directorate of Water Resources and the National Institute of Meteorology in establishing an early warning system for floods in the Medjerda River Basin, and to launch the basis for the data exchange. This convention will be a good example to follow for other institutions to establish a common understanding and to foster dialogue and cooperation in order to build up a solid platform for data exchange.
