A REC delegation comprised of Dr. Radoje Lausevic, REC Deputy Executive Director, Dr. Janos Zlinsky, Director of the Sustainable Development Academy, and Ms. Jovanka Ignjatovic, REC Senior Expert on Water Management, met today with H.E. Samia Ilhem Ammar, the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Hungary, to discuss the WATER SUM project and to strengthen ties between the international organisation and Tunisia.
The discussion revolved around several points, including the development of a roadmap for furthering ongoing cooperation between the REC and Tunisia, as well as the opportunity to consider the REC's involvement within the broader framework of Hungarian-Tunisian bilateral relations.
The talks then moved on to the current implementation of the WATER SUM project and its upcoming activities and events. Dr. Lausevic introduced the "Water, Growth and Stability: Transboundary Water Cooperation for Sustainable Growth and Stability in MENA" conference, which is scheduled to take place on April 28-30, 2016 at the REC's Head Office in Szentendre. The conference's leitmotif will be the need for cooperation and a regional approach in managing water problems, and discussion will take place on how the WATER SUM project can contribute to this end.
In August 2016, the REC, together with like-minded partners active in the water sector, will contribute to World Water Week 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden. The REC plans to build on last year's success of the MENA World Water Café methodology, which led to insightful discussion and analysis of the relationships between water, governance, climate change and security.
Finally, in April 2017, when the WATER SUM project will wind down to an end, the "Water for Sustainable Development" conference will take place. The final WATER SUM conference event will bring together all the involved parties to present project outcomes and achievements and to provide an opportunity for follow-up actions.
H.E. Ambassador Ammar concluded the meeting by inviting the REC to visit Tunisia in March 2016 to talk more about the implementation of priority actions and the modalities for cementing a fruitful working relationship.
