By suburban train
A
suburban train called the HÉV runs to Szentendre from Batthyány tér in
Budapest, which is also a stop on the red metro line. Trains leave regularly
(about every 10-30 minutes), and the journey to Szentendre takes about
45 minutes. Szentendre is the last station. From there, the REC is a 20-minute
walk or a short ride in a taxi. The distance is about 2 kilometres. (Please
see the map of Szentendre.) For train times, please see the detailed
HÉV schedule.
By bus
There is a frequent bus service between Budapest and Szentendre from 5:20
a.m. to 22:40 p.m. each day. The bus terminal in Budapest is located at
the Árpád híd metro station (blue line), and the Szentendre bus terminal
is located at the suburban train (HÉV) station (see
the map of Szentendre).
There is also a bus stop about 200 metres north of the REC. Tickets are
purchased on the bus and cost about HUF 200 (EUR 1). The journey takes
about 40 minutes.
By car
Travelling
by car to Szentendre via Budapest is best done by taking road #11 (Esztergom),
which is well signposted from all main roads and intersections in the
capital. The route (dual-carriageway) follows the Danube north through
Budapest's suburbs and green belt toward the "Pilis hills."
A 30-minute drive from the centre of Budapest (avoiding rush hour: 7:30-9:30
a.m. and 4:00-6:30 p.m.), will bring you into Szentendre and past signs
indicating the distance to the REC's head office.
The office can be best reached by following road #11, which will take
you along the outskirts of the old town and past a sculpture park (both
on your right). Approximately 200 metres after the traffic light, take
the sharp right. The REC is on the left about 100 metres further.
Approaching Szentendre from the north (e.g. Visegrád,
Esztergom, Komárom), follow the directions toward Budapest. Just after
the signposts for "Pap Sziget" on your left, take the left-turning
lane, which will bring you within 100 metres of the REC on your left."
By bicycle
There is a bicycle path from Budapest all the way to Szentendre, though
it is difficult to follow in places. Alternatively, a bicycle can be brought
onto the suburban train (HÉV) after validating a regular train ticket
(there are designated cars). You can park your bicycle in the REC's covered
bicycle storage facility.
By taxi
You
can take a taxi from the HÉV terminal in Szentendre to the REC for up
to HUF 1000 (EUR 4). A trip from the centre of Budapest will cost up to
HUF 15,000 (EUR 60) and up to HUF 20,000 (EUR 80) from the airport. Reliable
and recommended Budapest taxi companies are:
Fôtaxi (Tel: 222-2222), Taxi2000 (Tel: 200-0000), 6x6 Taxi (Tel: 266-6666)
and City Taxi (Tel: 211-1111). All taxi companies in Szentendre offer
good prices and service (for example Dunakanyar Taxi, Tel: [26] 311-111).
When using a taxi service, check that the meter is reset before your journey
commences.
By boat
As
indicated on the map of Szentendre, there is
a boat station close to the REC's premises. Boats depart from Budapest
(Vigadó tér) on their way to Szentendre every day at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.,
and return from Szentendre to Budapest at 11:45 a.m. and 5:55 p.m. The
journey takes about an hour and a half.
Please note that this schedule applies only for the summer period. A one-way
ticket costs about HUF 750 (EUR 3) and a return ticket about HUF 1,100
(EUR 4.5).
