The REC Country Office Hungary has been in existence
since 1992. It was initially part of the Headquarters, but it has been
independent since 1995 -- when the Headquarters moved to Szentendre--
with a full-time staff of 2 as well as casual and contract workers.
Apart from information services and its own initiatives, managing different
supporting projects is one of the key activities of the RECCountry Office
Hungary. During the past few years, about 500 of the 1500 submitted proposals
have been given support within the framework of the Local Grant Project
financed by the European Union's PHARE Program.
The grant projects of the REC Country Office Hungary
do not solely serve support purposes. NGOs can obtain information about
the conditions through a significantly precise call for tender, and the
Office staff follows closely the implementation of the projects. In fact,
the support program has a very important educational function -- the consistent
proposal and account system "compels" organizations to obtain
effective knowledge on programming, implementation and account. Achievements
can be best shown by the hundreds of accomplished projects as well as
the fact that most of the small organizations, ponderously drafting and
inexperienced back in 1994, have become really professional project designers
and applicants during the last five years
