Kyoto in the home

This 3-year project called Kyoto in the home started in January 2006. The aim of the project is to popularize the usage of renewable energy sources in homes. The title, Kyoto in home, refers to the fact that families are also able to significantly contribute to the meeting of Kyoto Protocol targets, halting climate change in their homes.

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases. One of the biggest polluters is the energy sector, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels. In our everyday lives we are using great amounts of electricity. If we are using sufficient amounts of energy to satisfy our needs, but meeting these needs from renewable energy sources, we contribute to halting global warming.

Simple energy efficiency tips, and the fact that small-scale renewable energy sources can be used in homes - and how - are not evident for everyday people.

In order to increase understanding, educational material and a website will be developed through the Kyoto in the home project. Easy-to-understand descriptions, practical advice, and interactive games and exercises will educate and encourage families and children to use less energy and thereby emit less CO2.

The project is financed by the European Union Intelligent Energy Europe programme. Sixteen partners are involved in the project from nine European countries. The Hungarian activities are being carried out by REC Country Office Hungary.

In order to reach as many children and families as possible, trainings for teachers are being organised to introduce the new educational materials and their potential as part of the curriculum.
