Electronic Tools for the Aarhus Convention
As of 1 April, a snapshot assessment detailing priority
needs for Electronic Tools, the respective challenges
and obstacles to their implementation, and existing case
studies in the UN/ECE region is now available.
The survey was completed by 16 countries representative
of Western Europe, Central and Eastern Euope and the Newly
Independent States and is accompanied by a separate set
of Recommendations
which will help define a road map for the future work
of the Task Force.

The first Electronic Tools Task Force workshop was
broadcast live via the Internet
and presented and analysed case studies of successful
practices and failures; emerging initiatives; and problems
and needs in the use of electronic tools for reaching
the goals of the Aarhus Convention. A Press

New EC Rules to Implement the Aarhus Convention
The European Commission has launched a new proposal to
extend the rights of the public to participate in decisionmaking
processes. The draft directive
complements the EC's recent proposal to improve public
access to information but makes no reference to the use
of electronic tools to facilitate access to both the process
and related information. A press

website.
Environmental Data Collection to Improve in Accession
Countries
The collection of environmental data is set to be harmonised
in EU accession countries with the standards of the European
Environment Agency following the adoption of agreements
with the 13 candidate countries in December. Membership
includes requirements to create infrastructure (including
data collection/monitoring networks) for generating uniform
environmental information. Further information can be

The ICT Stories Competition 2001
Stories on the use of ICTs applied to social and economic
development have been collected by Information
for Development and the International
Institute for Communication and Development. The Stories
website offers further information.
The Stockholm Challenge Award
IT-projects that engage and inform people and offer them
a means to participate in the New Economy, Education,
Health and Quality of Life, Public Services and Democracy,
Culture and Entertainment, Environment and the Global
Village have recently (until April 1, 2001) been collected
under the auspices of the Stockholm Challenge Award..

Funding Opportunities
The IST programme is inviting proposals until April 25th
that demonstrate innovative examples of public services
in the digital age, notably in the fields of cross-border
interactions, e-Democracy, health, culture, road transport
and environment. (The Information Society Technologies
Programme develops electronic tools through research projects.
ISTs for the environment in the past have contributed
toward improving environmental data collection, management
and dissemination).

Sustainability, Community Information and Feedback

The Meeting is organised by the Agency for Economic Development,
EURODEC Ploiesti, in collaboration with the Open Society
Foundation Bucharest. The main goals of the meeting are:
- To build a platform for the exchange of experiences
and good practices between countries in the CEE

protection
- To establish a discussion forum for environmental
