Case Studies

Electronic tools were commonly used to passively disseminate environmental information under article 5 and in relation to specific projects under article 6. Very few related to the more interactive elements of Article 6, and 4, 7, 8.

Almost all of the 36 case studies gathered relied on the Internet to disseminate information to the public. However, examples were also gathered regarding the use of telephone hotlines, CD-ROM, display boards, and email networks.

Regionally:

  • Western Europe tends to rely on a variety of electronic and non-electronic mechanisms to disseminate environmental information (related to article 5). Internet portal gateways, geographic information systems, telephone hotlines and public information centers were highlighted mechanisms.
  • In Central and Eastern Europe, a quarter of its reported practice related to the active provision of information under articles 4, 7 and 8. A variety of mechanisms were reported, including use of the Internet for publishing and facilitating public interaction; public display boards; telecottages; and hardcopy sources.
  • In the NIS, two case studies demonstrated implementation of almost all Convention articles/paragraphs. These included an electronic NGO email network and a physical walk-in information center.
