The EuroVelo No. 6 bicycle route connects Budapest with Szentendre. The path runs alongside the Danube and is clearly signposted. Alternatively, from Bekasmegyer, on the outskirts of Budapest, there is a cycle path that runs alongside Road 11, the main road into Szentendre, although the quality of the path is rather poor. It is also possible to transport bicycles on the suburban train (HEV). If you have a BKK public transport pass, it is worth buying a monthly bicycle pass (for HUF 540), which is valid for the entire length of the HEV line. Without a pass you will need to buy an additional single ticket for your bicycle (HUF 450). (N.B. Unlike the bicycle pass, the personal BKK pass is only valid within the territory of Budapest. For the stretch of line between Bekasmegyer and Szentendre, you need to pay an additional HUF 310.)
You can park your bicycle in the REC’s covered bicycle storage facility (ask at the porter’s lodge for the padlock code). A 2015 map of Szentendre-based bike services can be viewed here. More support to those interested in riding to/from REC is available here.
A frequent bus service between Budapest and Szentendre is operated by Volanbusz each day between 05:20 and 22:40. Buses depart from Budapest from the Újpest-Városkapu metro station (blue line). In Szentendre, the closest stop is Danubius Szálló, about 200 metres north of the REC. The journey takes about 40 minutes. https://www.volanbusz.hu/hu/menetrendek/vonal-lista/vonal/?menetrend=2920
BY SUBURBAN TRAIN
A suburban train (HEV) runs to Szentendre from Batthyany ter in Budapest (on the red metro line). The H5 trains leave regularly (every 10 to 30 minutes), and the journey to Szentendre, where the train terminates, takes about 39 minutes. The REC is about 2.5 kilometres from the HEV station (a 25-minute walk or a short taxi ride). (Please see the map of Szentendre.) The detailed H5 schedule can be found at http://www.bkk.hu/en/timetables/ Click on the H icon at the top and select the H5 route.
As indicated on the map of Szentendre, there is a boat station close to the REC. Boats depart from Budapest (Vigado ter) to Szentendre every day at 10:00 and 14:00, and from Szentendre to Budapest at 17:00 and 19:00 during the summer months only. The journey takes about an hour and a half. A one-way ticket costs about HUF 2,000 (EUR 6.50), and a return ticket about HUF 3,000 (EUR 9.75).
BY AIRPORT MINIBUS
The miniBUD shuttle bus service charges a fixed price for a transfer to the REC. Tickets can be purchased on arrival at the airport from the miniBUD desk. For your return to the airport, you will need to phone +36 1 550 0000 at least one day in advance to arrange for a minibus to pick you up. (On the way to Szentendre, it is likely that you will be the last passenger to be dropped off, which can take up to two hours.) Further information in English about Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc Airport and the airport shuttle service can be found at http://www.bud.hu/english/passengers/access_and_parking/by_airportshuttle
The journey from the centre of Budapest to the REC will cost up to HUF 15,000 (EUR 60), and up to HUF 12,000 (EUR 47) from the airport. Reliable and recommended Budapest taxi companies include Fotaxi (Tel: 222 2222); Taxi2000 (Tel: 200 0000); 6x6 Taxi (Tel: 266 6666); Zona Taxi (Tel: 365 5555); and City Taxi (Tel: 211 1111). All the taxi companies in Szentendre offer good prices and a reliable service (for example Dunakanyar Taxi, Tel: 311 111). You are always advised to check that the meter is reset before your journey commences.
