The REC Conference Center in Szentendre, Hungary, was retrofitted in 2008 as a state-of-the-art training, demonstration and conference centre that aims for zero emissions. The building achieves annual CO2 savings of over 35 tonnes. It is an ideal venue for conferences or meetings, in particular those related to sustainable development solutions or corporate social responsibility.

CO2 savings in the last seven days from the use of renewables

Annual CO2 emissions from the former conference building were over 64 tonnes. Due to new insulation and other efficiency measures, the retrofitted building saves on average over 35 tonnes of CO2 a year. The graph shows savings generated by the photovoltaic solar panels.

The REC Conference Center aims to promote existing know-how in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy. In the form of a brownfield investment, the REC's existing conference building was redesigned to reduce fossil-fuel-based energy consumption to zero, thereby eliminating carbon dioxide emissions.

The Conference Center features the following air-conditioned rooms:

  • a conference hall
  • a banquet hall
  • two meeting rooms (Board Room and Library)
  • a secretariat room
  • foyer for receptions

Technical equipment:

  • audio system throughout the building, with centralised sound control
  • VCR projector with screen
  • CD player
  • video and television
  • computer equipment, including PCs and printer
  • direct Internet access (WiFi)
  • overhead and slide projectors
  • flip-charts, including stationery

Optional services on request:

  • accommodation
  • catering
  • simultaneous translation
  • special leisure or professional programmes
  • transfers and transportation
  • conference registration service

The project was implemented with the financial support of the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, Italy and a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Financial Mechanism
