Preamble

The projects selected for the Good Practice report represent a good illustration of innovative applications of telematics for the environment. Nine projects were supported by the Telematics Applications Programme - Environment Sector and ESPRIT programmes. They have strictly focused on specific environment telematics applications tailored to selected users in different European sites. The other projects here considered were not involved in these specific technology programmes but they have nevertheless demonstrated how telematics tools may help to perform and achieve specific environmental protection targets, involving different actors at different geographic scales both in Europe and in the CEE countries.

The areas of application of most of the projects focus on one main environmental domain (air quality or water resource management). However, for some of the projects, the categorisation in one specific environmental domain is not applicable, because of their versatility in several application domains. Therefore, the structure of this document has considered the experience of each project without any specific division between air and water domains, by providing the description of good practice for the whole cluster of sixteen projects.

The structure of this chapter is provided by some main elements of the Good Practice form. A more detailed description of each project is provided within the Virtual Gallery, where the information provided by each project is complementary to that provided in the following sections of this chapter. In the project descriptions within the gallery more attention has been given to the technical/operational characteristics of each project.
