Objectives of the Good Practice Report

The Good Practice Report aims to serve as a tool to identify particularly interesting and efficient telematics research and applications which could be fully or partially applied in similar sites elsewhere in order to maximise the benefits of the research among other users. The Good Practice Report has two key aims:

  1. The analysis and discussion of a number of research projects in the field of air pollution and water resources. The analysis includes a profile of the application site, the objectives, commercial practice, technical profile, environment requirements and transferability of the product as well as the identification of other potential users.
  2. A set of conclusions and recommendations on good practice in the application of telematics to air and water environmental management.
The Good Practice Report does not identify one single 'good-practice' for air and water environmental management in EU and CEE countries; on the contrary, it will provide a range of successful solutions specifically valuable to given local, regional, national and even transboundary conditions.

The exchange of good practice yields tangible results only when the different parties involved (experts, project managers and other actors) comment and provide feedback on these practices. The benefits of this type of exercise are the identification of guidelines, instruments and references leading to better environmental management, structural change and the promotion of partnerships. Partnerships support effective use of limited resources, sharing of knowledge to accelerate progress and dissemination of lessons learned to improve the quality of activities.

The benefits of this approach in the long-term view are: better services for the individual and enterprises; lower costs; more user friendly services; better economic performance; an improved environment and better preservation of ecosystems and natural resources. It may contribute also to further economic convergence with the EU and CEE countries thus helping to close gaps in productivity and to reduce economic inequality.

The sharing of good practice will allow the environmental management community to consider how to adapt the experiences of others in the implementation of their own management plans, or more generally, to ease the take-up of EU research results. The deployment and the promotion of Good Practices lies primarily with industry, local, regional and national authorities, environment operators and env i ronment user groups. The European Commission however, has acted as a catalyst to facilitate the good practice exercise in the ENWAP User Forum in order to foster future implementation of the results of the TAP-EN applications and to learn from the conclusions that will be drawn at the end of the exercise. The ENWAP User Forum has lead many meetings focussing on the good practices and during the DETERMINE conference has stimulated discussions on subjects inherent to good practice.
