Cleaner Fleet Management Training
for Central and Eastern Europe

Szentendre, Hungary, September 18-19, 2008

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) held a training session on cleaner fleet management at the newly refurbished, energy efficient REC Conference Center in September 2008. The event was sponsored by TNT, and the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM).

On the first day of the event public and private fleet managers were trained to apply the UNEP/TNT Cleaner Fleet Management Toolkit. On Day 2 staff from the REC country offices went through a training of trainers with the aim of promoting the toolkit’s adoption in further workshops throughout the REC’s beneficiary region.

The toolkit contains a number of tools that, when used together, function to prepare both public and private vehicle fleet managers to (1) evaluate the impacts of their fleets on the environment and human health and (2) then develop a practical strategy for corrective and cost-effective action through a number of options (from eco driving and improved maintenance through to advanced fuels and technologies). The toolkit is available online at http://www.unep.org/tnt-unep/toolkit.

Mr. Turgut Yildiz, Country General Manager of TNT Express Turkey, in the training gave an example of the Toolkit's successful application by the TNT fleet in Turkey.
