Workshop and study visit: Further Support to Sustainable Transport Policies in South Eastern Europe

May 6-10, 2008, Gdansk-Gdynia, Poland

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) organised a workshop and study visit: Further Support to Sustainable Transport Policies in South Eastern Europe, May 6-10, 2008 in Gdansk-Gdynia, Poland. The event was held with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment. This meeting was organised as a follow-up of the Regional Meeting of Transport Stakeholders on Sustainable Public Transport Policies in South Eastern Europe (SEE), organised by the REC in 2007, during which it become clear that more assistance in the field of sustainable mobility was needed in the SEE region.

The overall objective of a workshop and a site visit was to provide further support to SEE in better understanding of sustainable transport policies and practices in the EU and in sustainable urban transport planning and operation following best practices from EU new member states. Representatives of municipalities, transport operators, NGOs and other relevant institutions and organisations were invited.

The itinerary of the visit included a number of presentations on public transport systems in Gdansk-Gdynia and site visits to interesting transport developments in both cities, one being a new bus depot in Gdynia and the other a new tram line extension in Gdansk. During this meeting, attention was paid to cycling as an alternative mode of transport and issues related to regional integration of public transport. Other presentations featured European examples of good practice. The last day of the meeting was devoted to sustainable urban transport plans – guidance on preparation and real examples from EU cities were presented. These were followed by a discussion during the workshop.

The event was a great opportunity to exchange experience and learn about challenges and progress achieved in implementing sustainable public transport systems in new EU member states. A presentation introduced the concept of sustainable urban transport plans, including guidance on their development, arousing significant interest among participants. The meeting was an attempt to address challenges in SEE region such as the lack of sustainable transport planning, problems with regional integration of public transport, and slow inclusion of more environmentally friendly modes of transport.
