Regional Meeting of Transport Stakeholders
on Sustainable Public Transport Policies in South Eastern Europe (SEE)
June 21-22. 2007, European Youth Centre,
Budapest, Hungary
The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern
Europe (REC) organised a regional meeting of transport stakeholders on
sustainable public transport policies in South Eastern Europe (SEE) on
June 21-22 2007 at the European Youth Centre, Budapest, Hungary. The meeting
was held with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning
and Environment.
The event’s overall objective was to assist the SEE in better understanding
sustainable transport policies and practices within the context of the
EU as well as general principles of sustainable urban transport planning
and operations using the best available practices.
Twenty public transport stakeholders from SEE cities and territories (including
representatives of municipalities and transport operators, NGOs and other
relevant institutions and organisations), several EU speakers and the
REC took part in the discussion.
In order to facilitate the talks a background paper was prepared and distributed
to the participants, based on interviews in three pilot countries and
other research.
During the meeting, speakers presented:
- the key points of EU transport policy,
- summaries of other relevant EU transport projects
and initiatives, and
- lessons learnt from new member states.
The regional meeting for transport stakeholders helped
to identify the specific needs and major problems of SEE urban transport.
It stimulated a debate on measures to be taken to address the current
challenges, having in mind the objectives of the EU integration process.
The event was also an opportunity to exchange experience and learn about
the progress achieved in promoting sustainable public transport in the
new EU member states.
