Integration
of environmental concerns into all policies and decision-making
processes in all sectors is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable
development. Among others, these sectors include central and local
levels of government and business. This integration requires reliable
and consistent information to be distributed to all policy makers;
involvement of all stakeholders; good land-use planning, and the
proper use of valuable sectoral integration tools, such as environmental
impact assessment (EIA), strategic environmental assessment (SEA)
and economic and other instruments.
Transport impacts on the environment must be fully
taken into account by transport policy and this policy should reflect
the principles of sustainable transport. Sustainable transport is
transport that meets a society's mobility needs without endangering
public health or ecosystems.
The Regional Environmental Center for Central and
Eastern Europe is an active player in the integration of environmental
concerns into transport policy. It works to promote sustainable
transport in two main regions of operation:
- Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) – currently
new EU members
- South Eastern Europe (SEE) – Balkan countries
and Turkey
The REC also takes part in other initiatives such
as Partnership
for Clean Fuels and Vehicles.
