Welcome
to the homepage of the project on Public Transport Promotion in
Central and Eastern Europe, which reached its successful conclusion
in September 2004. The project developed regional cooperation among
public transport stakeholders in the new EU member states and candidate
countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
Regional cooperation enables
promotion of sustainable public transport in the region and addresses
public transport problems in the framework of sectoral integration.
It also builds the capacity of the public transport companies and
municipalities and establishes dialogue between them, donors and other
financial institutions on financing sustainable public transport.
We
would like to thank the Royal
Ministry of the Environment of Norway for its support of this
project, which ran from December 2001 to September 2004. In this period the project was managed by Grazyna Krzywkowska and was accomplished successfully. For more information please contact Wioletta Szymanska a project manager at REC.
A search facility for electronic resources on sustainable transport and sectoral integration is now available.

New book "Next
Stop: Sustainable Transport —
A Survey of Public Transport in Six Cities of Central and Eastern
Europe" is
now available (15-MByte, PDF file).
Sustainable transport meets the mobility
needs of society without endangering environment and public
health. The book presents case studies of public transport needs,
development priorities and financing in six European capitals
(Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Vilnius, Warsaw, Tallinn), along
with expert policy analysis and suggestions for sectoral integration.
Urban areas in Central and Eastern Europe are
currently facing growing traffic congestion, road safety issues,
rising air and noise pollution. Policy decisions and actions
are needed to encourage use of public transport, modal shift
from road to rail, the design and construction of multi-modal
transport corridors, promotion of walking and cycling, and many
other measures introducing or implementing sustainable transport
concepts.
