Good Practices in Environmental Management Systems - A new 1 page introductory brochure (Adobe Acrobat PDF - 160 K) in Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian and English
Introduction
"ENWAP" stands for The Environment Telematics for Water and Air Pollution Management - Expert Group. As a user forum, its objectives are the exchange of information on developments and applications emerging from Environment Telematics Applications (EN-TAP) and other related projects in air and water pollution management. Common user requirements, best practices, the transfer of know-how and experiences are exchanged within the group which includes representatives both from EU and Central and Eastern European countries. A second objective is to facilitate the uptake of telematics projects and results in a European/trans-European environment, and to encourage the greater involvement of users beyond the Research & Technical Development community.
Meeting Fora
Since 1997, meetings pursuing the above objectives have taken place two to three times per year, with the most recent event being held in Brussels on 16 April, 1999. The April meeting was also attended by new members from CEE countries including; Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia. All meeting agendas, objectives, outcomes and participants are included in the minutes.
Publications
Two working documents supporting the above objectives, one on user requirements (now available) and another on good practice case studies have recently been compiled. A newsletter is also available.
- The User Requirements in Air and Water Management Systems report was completed in autumn 1998. The document examines a number of current or recently completed EN-TAP and related projects in the field of air and water, and in particular those technical characteristics which users would need to satisfy, implement and utilise when transferring these applications to their own cities/regions. These characteristics or "requirements" were evaluated in relation to four key areas including; i) information required for the system; ii) general data availability; iii) technological specifications; and iv) overall economic value. The publication is now accessible online and can also be obtained in hard copy from Myriam van Antwerpen.
- The Good Practice in Air and Water Management Systems for Europe guide (also available in Adobe PDF file format - 2.8 MB) consists of a comprehensive evaluation of EN-TAP and other related projects. Among the features examined project by project, are profile of the application site, its objectives, environmental requirements and product transferability, commercial uses, target users, and lessons learned during application. The Executive summary is now available in five Central and Eastern European languages (including Czech, Hungarian, Romanian and Russian) as a downloadable (Adobe Acrobat PDF - 480 K) file and English
Susanna Azzali, the ENWAP Rapporteur who is under contract to ARTTIC, is currently coordinating the completion of the good practice document, which is being expanded to include several CEE case studies, an analysis and synthesis of the above mentioned information as well as relevant conclusions and recommendations. A draft version will be made available in early March, while the final draft version will be presented and discussed at the CAPE dissemination event in Munich, June 21-22, 1999. The final version will be made available in September for presentation. A current draft is available from Ms. Azzali while summary descriptions of many of the projects included are available from the DETERMINE conference proceedings and the European Commission's website.
- Within the ENWAP group, a newsletter has also been periodically made available. Back-issues are hosted by the Center for Eco-Information and Technology.
Experts
Some 14 experts make up the ENWAP Expert Group. These include representatives of the European Union's member states, and central Europe's EU accession countries. All are actively involved in the field of environment telematics, and are in many cases responsible for their own EN-TAP projects. These individuals represent a variety of backgrounds including research, national and regional governments, business and non-governmental organisations. Expert and past participant coordinates along with links to their respective projects are listed separately.
The European Commission
The ENWAP user forum is part of the ANIMATE project, a Telematics support action funded by the European Commission's Telematics Applications Programme (TAP), Environment Sector. Further information concerning the European Commission's activities and future funding opportunities is available from:
