Advantages to Sustainable Cities

Benefits that can be achieved by communities working towards sustainable urban development include:

  • Preservation of natural, economic and social resources for future generations.
  • Greater access, provision and understanding of information concerning sustainable development.
  • Development of communities within cities which participate in their own sustainable development.
  • Eradication of social problems - crime, drugs, and homelessness.
  • Social equity should allow for minority races, genders, ages, disabled and other sectors to participate not only in the development and decisions of decision-making processes, but also in the actual implementation of plans.
  • Local planning strategies developed with regard to the benefit of local businesses and inhabitants.
  • Cleaner, safer environment with improved health quality.
  • Preservation of culture and history important both for local (sense of identity) and for tourism development.
