Environmental NGO Networking in Central Europe: An MSc Thesis at the Central European University

Gabor Heves, 1997

This thesis focuses on the synthesis and analysis of three recent trends in the countries of Central Europe:

  • the establishment of the environmental NGO movement,
  • the emergence of electronic telecommunication networks, and
  • the appearance of environmental NGO networks.

Extended research has been carried out to highlight pros and contras of NGO computer networking. This research approaches the issue from several perspectives, relying on the results of case studies:

  • a questionnaire survey,
  • statistical analysis, and
  • personal participation.

The results, recommendations and implications of the research demonstrate the advantages of linking environmental NGO networks into communication networks. On the other hand, these recommendations also support addressing adverse issues.

The paper includes:

  • a general overview of the Central European NGO movement and electronic networks,
  • a comparison of conventional ways of NGO collaboration vs. networking,
  • assorted case studies, and
  • discussion of the research's major findings, including both positive and negative issues.

These findings highlighted that electronic networks fill in a communications niche of environmental NGOs. The thesis also discusses some of the pitfalls of using electronic communications networks, and provides hints to avoid them.
