Environmental NGO Electronic Networking in South Eastern Europe

Building on the success and experiences of the first regional meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria, the second regional networking meeting for environmental NGOs in South Eastern Europe (SEE) took place in Pristina and Brezovica on April 4-5, 2003. As a recognition of the progress made by new networking initiatives during the past year, this workshop was organised by Sharri.Net, the young Kosovar environmental NGO electronic network, in cooperation with the REC's field office in Pristina.

The meeting featured two main parts. The aim of the first day's morning session was to review past activities and to promote the networks to government officials, donors and the media. This event was held in Pristina and attracted significant media coverage, including news reporting on three local TV channels as well as a number of daily newspapers.

Prishtina meeting
Brezovica meeting The morning session was followed by a 1.5 day informal workshop in the town of Brezovica. During this part the challenges and obstacles against electronic networking were identified along with proposals to overcome them. There was also a brainstorming session for the next steps in international cooperation. A joint statement (2-page PDF file) was drafted and accepted.

The meeting was a good opportunity to share experiences and map out future joint work, to plan further cooperation between the REC and Milieukontakt Oost-Europa and to make concrete suggestions for the project's implementation. The meeting proved useful for building a sense of community and enthusiasm for SEE regional networking initiatives.
