The Balkan Bytes project brings together electronic networks of South Eastern European environmental NGOs to share information and cooperate on addressing environmental issues. This website gives you a general overview of project activities and introduces you to the work of these networks.

Highlights

• Activities of the Balkan Bytes project came to an end in May 2005. Please read the project final report (9-page, 220-KByte).
• At the Connecting Networks workshop (Belgrade, 8-10 June 2005) network representatives reviewed progress in information access and identified future priorities.
• A new regional network started its work in Croatia. See the Grincajg website and progress report (33-Kbyte PDF).
• In 2004 the following international training courses were organised:

• What did networks do in 2004? See their activity plans and reports.
• The Balkan Bytes networks introduced themselves at an international exhibition in Rimini, Italy. See the Balkan Cyber Tea House.
• Access the full text of a university thesis titled "Outlooks for NGO network self-financing." It was written as part of the Balkan Bytes project to help networks improve their financial sustainability.

• The two-year South Eastern European networking project was implemented with great success. See final reports.
• The Balkan IT project on exchange of environmental information  was a finalist for the Stokholm Challenge Awards - See press release.
• The second regional networking meeting.
• Supported environmental networks were featured extensively by the international media.
• The project has received support from the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory (Aug 7, 2002).
• The project's flagship publication, Networks at Work is available here.
• The first regional networking meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria.
• New networks: Sharri.Net, QKE and Eko.Net are born!
