Pollution data going public

A new project aims to raise public awareness of industrial pollution through the promotion of databases called pollutant release and transfer registers (PRTRs). During the project, which helps implement the Aarhus Convention, several countries expressed interest in setting up PRTRs. To assist, an assessment was conducted of necessary legislative, institutional and practical changes in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro. The assessments were discussed in meetings attended by governmental authorities, NGOs and other stakeholders. Recommendations are being developed to guide authorities on measures they will have to implement. The project, funded by the Netherlands Ministry for Foreign Affairs and implemented by the REC Public Participation Programme, will include a study tour to the Czech Environmental Information Agency (CENIA) to learn about the creation and operation of an integrated pollution register.
