Border towns unite

Cross-border cooperation and environmental quality will be improved in one go with the implementation of a REC project related to investment and planning.
The project, which saw a round of workshops ending in March, involves three pairs of cross-border communities in the Western Balkans. The three sites are:

  • Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Mali Zvornik, Serbia and Montenegro;
  • Debar, Macedonia and Peshkopia, Albania; and
  • Bileca, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Niksic, Serbia and Montenegro.
    It aims to improve contacts and cooperation while addressing the region’s need for environmental investment.

The project trains local decision makers and relevant experts to identify and prepare environmental investment projects and to create professional financing applications. Priority problems at the three sites concern water supply and the collection and discharge of wastewater. As a result of this work, four international-standard feasibility studies will be prepared with the involvement of local stakeholders and communities.
