Straightening the Drina

rid of the blanket of garbage behind the Perucac dam has proved almost
as difficult as unbending the famous Balkan river. When southern Slavs
say someone is trying to “straighten the Drina,” they mean
he is attempting the impossible . . .
Hot spots
singled out
Representatives from Balkan countries identified pilot projects
dealing with environmental hot spots in South Eastern Europe and the Tisza
River Basin. The projects were agreed to at a meeting May 12-14 in Cluj-Napoca,
Romania organised by the Environment and Security Partnership (EnvSec)
- an initiative of OSCE, UNDP, UNEP and NATO.
Police liberate landfill
After garbage accumulated in the streets for seven days, nearly
1,000 police officers in riot gear removed a road block that neighborhood
protesters had set up outside an overflowing landfill in the Sofia suburb
of Suhodol.

Mayors of 11 municipalities from the West Stara Planina Region
signed a letter of intent on July 8 with the aim of boosting cooperation
for the improvement of the environment, protection of natural resources
and cultural heritage and promotion of sustainable development.
