| Help for Serbian
port
A package amounting to EUR 15.8 million is being put
together to build sewerage infrastucture in Pancevo, a Serbian
industrial port on the Danube recovering from years of environmental
contamination that was worsened by NATO bomb
strikes in 1999.
The European Bank of Reconstruction and Development
EBRD is considering providing a loan of approximately EUR 9
million, whilst the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR)
and Italian government could provide grants of EUR 2 million
and EUR 1.8 million, respectively.
The project would result in a new wastewater treatment
plant and main collector, the rehabilitation of sewerage
facilities and extension of the sewerage network. The City of
Pancevo will contribute toward the cost of land acquisition.
Environmental benefits would include the alleviation of
problems caused by the discharge of untreated water released
by both residential customers and industrial facilities into the
Danube River. PPC Officer Gaetano Massara, who is preparing
the project for the EBRD, can provide further details
