| Albania wraps-up Green Pack After two years of work by the REC and nearly 45 experts from Albania, the local-language edition of the Green Pack educational toolkit was launched in Tirana on November 16. About 200 participants, including children from several schools in Tirana, attended the launch. REC Executive Director Marta Szigeti Bonifert attended the event along with Lufter Xhuveli, the Albanian Minister of Environment, Forestry and Water Administration, and Halit Shamata, Deputy Minister of Education and Science.
The Dutch ambassador to Albania was also on hand, the Netherlands’ government having given financial support for the Albanian Green Pack via the Dutch Cooperation for Development. “This education package is one of the most needed products for the Albanian education system. Our ministry considers itself one of the major stakeholders for the Green Pack’s implementation by supporting the environmental education programme in all regions through information and expertise,” Xhuveli said in his speech. “The REC engaged the best environmental expertise in the country to give the Green Pack an Albanian dimension,” said Mihallaq Qirjo, REC Country Director for Albania. The Green Pack is envisioned as an extra-curricular subject for Albanian seventh graders beginning in early 2007. It should reach approximately 1,700 schools and 65,000 pupils per year. The Green Pack, comprising a teacher’s guide, CD-Rom, board game and more, aims to give students a broad background in environmental themes such as consumer behaviour, climate change and ecology. Since the publication of the pilot Polish version, the Green Pack has also been adapted and translated into Hungarian, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak, Russian and English. Turkish and Azeri versions are forthcoming. |
