Greens grip Macedonian campaign

The Macedonian Green Centre (MGC), in cooperation with six environmental NGOs, ran a “Vote Nature!” campaign prior to the country's parliamentary elections in July, OneWorldSEE.org reported. The campaign aimed to inform voters and initiate debate among MP candidates on four essential environmental topics: the protection of Lake Ohrid; energy; waste management; and the meeting of environmental conditions for entry into the European Union.

Eko-Svest, Proaktiva and Eko.net from Skopje; Biosfera from Bitola; IO Krste Jon/Zelen Centar from Struga; and Green Power from Veles were MGC's campaign partners. The campaign was supported by Millieukontakt Oost Europa. Spitz daily newspaper and Skopje's City Radio were the media sponsors, with additional support provided by Imelda Ogilvy advertisers. The interest of political parties and coalitions in environmental issues is much bigger than before, said Metodija Sazdov, MGC's spokesperson. “Now, [political] parties are much more open to cooperation and in several cases they were the ones to initiate the first contact,” said Sazdov.
