Sava salvation

More than 40 stakeholders from the Sava River drainage met for a workshop October 31-November 2 as a first step toward creating a network to improve river basin management.

The workshop, held in Obrenovac, Serbia and Montenegro, brought together local self-government officials, water suppliers, NGOs, and government representatives. After learning about various international initiatives toward protecting the Sava’s riparian environment, participants developed action plans and project proposals to complement this work.
A field visit (pictured) to the Obrenovac Waterworks was organised for all participants and included visits to two water treatment plants: the water treatment plant in Zabrezje which draws water from a groundwater source and the water treatment plant in Baric which draws surface water directly from the Sava River.

The workshop was a cooperative initiative of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and REC Serbia and Montenegro.
