| MINING Representatives from Balkan countries identified pilot projects dealing with environmental hot spots in South Eastern Europe and the Tisza River Basin. The projects were agreed to at a meeting May 12-14 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania organised by the Environment and Security Partnership (EnvSec) - an initiative of OSCE, UNDP, UNEP and NATO. Most of the projects deal with problems stemming from past operations of mining and smelters, including abandoned tailings ponds, mine site rehabilitation, securing of community water supplies and flyaway dust. In the case of the Rosia Montana project, however, the goals are to promote community involvement in a pending project and to address economic development in the area after the mine's closure. The projects included in the list are: the Elbasan smelter complex (Albania); the Lipnica mine (Bosnia and Herzegovina); the Lojane mine (former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia); Rosia Montana mine (Romania); the Bor smelter and mines, the Mojkovac mine and the Trepca complex (Serbia and Montenegro). |
