Greenware: Low-cost Software Alternatives for Environmental
Information Management

The connecting networks project has released an inventory of alternative environmental software applications. This PDF-only publication – featuring about 30 selected software applications – provides users with a glimpse into the wealth of free and low-cost software that can be sure to interest environmental professionals.

The inventory includes examples of

  • generic open-source office applications,
  • various geographic information systems (GIS) applications and
  • selected software from the field of ecology and environmental pollution.

Those who wish to pursue the use of alternative software will also find within the publication an extensive collection of resource links to numerous other downloadable software programs.

The inventory – along with a training session on GIS and project strategic planning – was publicly presented at the connecting networks project workshop in Belgrade on 8-10 June, 2005.
